Zendo West

We are a small group, originally taught by Nenates Albert Roshi. We are a private zendo, but inquiries can be made by email to torontozendowest@gmail.com. You can read more about our history and our sister-groups here.

Orientation, dokusan and teisho are offered during weekly sits. The weekly sit is held on Tuesday evening, 5:30 – 7:30, in the church hall of St Pius X Catholic Church, 2305 Bloor St., near Runnymede Rd. How to Find Us

Monthly Sitting Schedule at Zendo West

First Tuesday of each month
5:30 - 6:00 - everyone sits
6:00 - 6:30 - Nenates gives a fresh new Teisho (or Stan Reads)
6:30 - 7:30 - Nenates (and/or Stan) gives Dokusan

Second Tuesday of each month
5:30 - 7:30 - Silent Day - everyone sits - no Teisho and no Dokusan

Third Tuesday of each month
5:30 - 6:00 - everyone sits
6:00 - 6:30 - Stan reads
6:30 - 7:30 - Nenates (and/or Stan) gives Dokusan

Fourth Tuesday of each month
5:30 - 6:00 - everyone sits
6:00 - 7:15 - Nenates (and/or Stan) gives Dokusan
7:15 - closing - social tea and cookies

Fifth Tuesday of each month (should there be one..)
5:30 - 7:30 - Silent Day - everyone sits - no Teisho and no Dokusan

Note: On days when Dokusan is not scheduled, anyone may, if the need is great, tap Nenates or Stan and ask for a private meeting.

Jiki and Zendo Prep Lists for Zendo West

Virtual Jiki

While we sit as a group virtually, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the jiki will please time the sits, to your best ability. You will want to unmute while striking bells and clackers, and mute during the sits. Leading in the Four Great Vows at the end would be great! Thank you.)

St. Pius Jiki

If your name is in the zendo preparation column, it means it is your task to

• come no later than 5:00 p.m
• bring flowers for the altar (optional - if you can/wish - Ofelia has a budget to reimburse you)
• open zendo using method shown during your training (including returning keys to the lockbox after opening)
• lead the room preparation so that everything is ready by 5:25
• ensure the room and the dokusan rooms are put back as we found them
• turn out lights and lock up

Schedule

Whether you are scheduled to be jikijitsu or for zendo preparation, if you are unavailable, it is important that you try to arrange for someone to cover for you:

• Refer to the email you received when your name was added to the schedule below; it should have "JIKI" in the subject line.
• There you will find contact info for the list of Jikis who can replace you.

Everyone else is asked to come as early as possible to help with the set-up and to stay afterwards to help put everything back in good order.

NOTE: In the Day column below, SP is for St Pius (in-person) sitting with (hopefully!) Zoom broadcast. ZM is Zoom only, since St Pius is unavailable. We don't yet know St Pius availability after May 2023.
